This project aims to eradicate the Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly) from Carnarvon in Western Australia, using a combination of fruit fly baiting and the release of sterile fruit flies (SIT). It will be used as a pilot for developing fruit fly free areas or areas of low pest prevalence in the southwest of Western Australia. It will also provide low cost sterile flies that will be available for area wide management in Western Australia or fruit fly eradication in the eastern states. To increase potential output of sterile flies for future projects the import and rearing of medfly eggs imported from overseas facilities will be used.
